Summer is here and you may be looking for ways to freshen up your home to welcome in the new season. Whether it be updating your outdoor furniture set to provide guests with a stylish spot for alfresco dining or finding new ways to add flair to your table decor, we have got you covered with our top tips.
As with any space of the home, furniture for your outdoor area is an investment so you want to choose wisely. These are the three most important points to consider before making your decision.
Before selecting any furniture, you need to understand how much space you have in your backyard or on your patio so that you select pieces that are size-appropriate. A small table and chairs will be lost in a big space while larger designs will look cramped and ill-fitting in a compact space. Once you have established the size of your space, you then need to decide how many people you would like to seat. Again, space is key. You cannot expect to fit an eight-seater table and chairs as well as a sofa into a small space. And remember that comfort is key so you’ll want to ensure that sitting down, getting up, and moving around this furniture is without any obstacles - squeezing in as many pieces as possible in a small space just won’t allow for this.
Outdoor furniture is an investment, so you want your purchase to age well over time and stand up to the South African climate. Metal furniture will rust quickly and while plastic is less expensive, it fades and cracks under the African sun. Wood is the best option when it comes to outdoor furniture - not only is it durable, but it is aesthetically pleasing and eco-friendly too. Woodbender outdoor furniture is made from Iroko, also known as African Teak. This honey-brown straight grain timber is dense, durable, and decay-resistant. Unlike some outdoor furniture, we have used stainless steel bolts, screws, and brackets or wood-to-wood interlocking joints to join our designs together. This means there are no glue lines that will degrade over time. Our outdoor furniture is also pretreated with Ciranova Outdoor Oil delivering Extreme UV protection.
It is not a hard and fast rule, but you generally want your outdoor furniture to reflect the interior style of your home, especially if you’re wanting to achieve that seamless indoor-outdoor living look. For example, if your home is more minimalist with a neutral palette then bright orange upholstery on your outdoor furniture is not going to be a good fit. You should also look to your garden and exterior architecture for inspiration and try to match the style. The Chalbi Tub and Chalbi Outdoor Couch offer great opportunities for adding a personalised touch to the Woodbender outdoor furniture offering. They come with cushions which we recommended covering in weatherproof material of your choice.
While we enjoy a beautifully laid table year-round, there is something extra special about sitting around a table with your loved ones this year. And here are a few of our top tips to create a beautiful summer table:
Add a modern pop with black:
The introduction of black can add a contemporary twist to even the most traditional of table settings. Table runners, serving dishes, and candles in inky hues are all great ways of adding this dark colour.
Decorate your chairs:
If your table is small with little space to express your creativity, then add some holiday cheer to the backs of your chairs. Ribbons, wreaths, and ornaments arranged at the back of your dining chairs pack a decorative punch.
Pears, apples, pomegranates, and lemons all make for wonderful table decor because of their varying sizes, shapes, and textures. They are inexpensive, smell wonderful, and can be cut up the next day as a snack.
Use string lights:
Battery-powered string lights, sometimes known as fairy lights, weaved throughout the table decor gives the setting a magical glow.
Don’t be afraid to incorporate bright patterns and unique designs:
Bright colors are having their day and are no longer relegated just to the kids' rooms. Bring your home to life with cheerful and sophisticated hues straight out of the crayon box. With a little consideration and planning, you will create maximum impact that's seriously grown up.
When decorating with bright colors, the first thing you need to do is decide what neutral you want to pair with your color. By choosing your neutral, you will be able to keep those brights in check without getting out of control. Consider what you want the focal point of the room to be and design the rest of the room around it. What kind of impact do you want to make? If it is bold walls, then keep the furniture neutral. And don't forget to always test out your bright paint swatches before you commit to a certain shade.
