Ever thought about designing your own reading nook? This small, snug space is the perfect place to escape to with a good book and a cup of something warm and delicious – and creating one is easier than you think.
“You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” – C.S. Lewis
FIND THE RIGHT SPOT
It’s important to find the perfect position for your reading nook as you’ll hopefully be spending plenty of time in it. While a corner of your lounge or sunroom (if you have one) is an obvious choice for this type of retreat, it really doesn’t require much space, so you could consider setting one up in your bedroom – especially if it’s a warm, sunny space.
CHOOSE A CHAIR
The location of your reading corner is certainly key, but it’s what you settle into that matters most. The chair you choose should be comfortable, be made to last, have plenty of room to curl up in, and look good in your corner. When it comes to upholstery, think about selecting a fabric in a colour or pattern that really pops and complements the design of the room.
BRING IN A TABLE
Every reading nook needs a table with enough space for the essentials – a cup of tea or coffee, a freshly baked pastry or tempting treat, and your next read(s). If you’re looking for some reading inspiration, goodreads.com is an excellent place to start.
ADD GOOD LIGHTING
This is very important – not only does it help to create the perfect ambiance for your happy place, it also ensures that you don’t strain your eyes when you’re reading. Ideally, your nook should have enough natural light for daytime reading and a floor or table lamp or hanging pendant for reading at night. Make sure that whatever lighting solution you choose complements the design of the space and the room.
And finally, include a few of your favourite things…
Beautiful cushions, a rug, a pot plant or two, a cosy blanket or throw, an ottoman for your feet – whatever it takes to make your reading nook a warm, cosy and comfortable space that you love spending time in.
